The Myth About Me and Risk

I just remembered receiving an unsolicited — and honestly ironic — comment from someone who told me that I don’t calculate risks whenever I make decisions.

If only they knew.

The truth is, it has always been the other way around. I have never been careless about the moves I make. If anything, I’ve spent most of my life observing, measuring, and understanding risk long before I take the leap.

I was raised by a father who is an organizer by nature, and influenced deeply by his eldest brother — my perfectionist uncle and my amazing mentors. All of them valued perseverance and street smarts. They were disciplined. Compassionate. Strategic. Grounded. Even though some of them are no longer physically here with me, their principles continue to guide me, especially as an entrepreneur.

So when someone assumes I jump without thinking, I can’t help but smile.

Because what looks like boldness on the outside is usually a mountain of internal calculation on the inside.

Yes, I am a sucker for risk.
Yes, I believe in leaps of faith.

But my leaps are never random.

When I reflect on how I decide whether to make a big stride, I always come back to three things:

1. The Right Purpose

If the mission aligns with who I am and what I stand for, the fear becomes smaller. Purpose quiets doubt.

2. The Right People

No meaningful risk is taken alone. The energy, integrity, and resilience of the people around me matter. If I trust the people, I can trust the process.

3. The Regret Test

I ask myself: Would I resent myself — or even others — if I didn’t at least try?

If the answer is yes, then the real risk isn’t failure.
The real risk is regret.

People often mistake courage for carelessness. But sometimes, courage is simply well-calculated conviction.

And here’s what I’ve come to embrace even more deeply:

No matter what the outcome is, the learner in me continues to thrive — and that, to me, is a big win.

Because at the end of the day, success isn’t just about results. It’s about growth. Every risk I take, every leap of faith, every calculated decision — whether it soars or stumbles — teaches me something valuable.

They see the move.
They see the outcome.
But they don’t see the evolution.

Wins validate you.
Losses refine you.

Either way, I grow.

So even if things don’t unfold exactly as planned, I walk away sharper, wiser, and more grounded than before. That’s why I’m not afraid to try. The experience itself becomes an asset.

For me, thriving isn’t tied to the result.
It’s tied to the becoming.

And that will always be a victory.
