Save yourself, too.
When I was younger, I was completely hooked on TV series—from F4’s Taiwanese dramas to Heroes. I still remember one of the most iconic lines from the show:
“Save the cheerleader, save the world.”
Back then, it was just a cool line from a TV series.
Today, it means something completely different to me.
Recently, I found myself reflecting on how lucky I have been to have the freedom to explore different paths, make mistakes, start over, and slowly figure out my purpose. I grew up learning resilience and grit—lessons that shaped the way I show up in life.
But with that resilience came something else.
The belief that I always had to keep going.
I’ve always been the kind of person who gives my all—sometimes even more than I have. When I believe in something, I go all in. My personality, my passion, and yes, even my MBTI probably explain a lot. 😂
For a long time, I thought that was my greatest strength.
And it is.
But I also learned that every strength has a shadow.
Because when you give too much, without knowing when to pause, you eventually start running on empty.
As an empath, I used to feel responsible for everyone and everything around me. I was a classic “yes woman.” Yes to opportunities. Yes to people. Yes to responsibilities. Yes to causes I believed in.
And somewhere along the way, I forgot to ask myself one important question:
What about me?
I would give and give and give—until there was almost nothing left.
And yes, the irony is that I was actually better at setting boundaries in relationships. 😆 Somehow, I knew how to protect my heart, but when it came to my work, my passion, my mission, and the people I wanted to help, I thought sacrificing myself was simply part of the job.
Until I burned out.
That experience taught me something I am still learning today:
You cannot pour endlessly from an empty cup.
As a leader and entrepreneur, I am beginning to understand that taking care of myself is not separate from my mission. It is part of my responsibility.
My work with Sinaya Seafood is bigger than just building a business. It is a commitment—to our seas, to our fishing communities, to creating better opportunities, and to building a more sustainable and equitable seafood system.
And perhaps that is exactly why I need to take care of myself.
Because the mission needs me well.
Not just productive.
Not just busy.
Not just constantly giving.
But well.
And the truth is, Sinaya is not my only dream.
I still have other dreams waiting for me.
Dreams I have yet to explore. Places I still want to see. Stories I still want to write. Skills I still want to learn. Moments I still want to experience. People I still want to share my life with.
There are dreams I haven't even discovered yet.
I want to see more of the world.
I want to keep creating.
I want to grow, laugh, love, and experience life beyond the things I need to accomplish.
I want to see the dreams I carry today become reality—and still have enough time, energy, and curiosity to dream again.
Maybe “save the cheerleader, save the world” means something different when you grow older.
Maybe before trying to save everything and everyone around us, we need to remember that we are also worth saving.
To the leaders who carry too much.
To the entrepreneurs who feel guilty when they rest.
To the empaths who keep saying yes.
To the dreamers who are fighting for something bigger than themselves.
You do not have to destroy yourself to prove how committed you are.
Rest does not mean you are giving up.
Boundaries do not mean you care less.
Asking for help does not mean you are weak.
And taking care of yourself does not mean you are abandoning the mission.
Sometimes, the most responsible thing you can do for the people you want to serve is to make sure you do not lose yourself while serving them.
So yes, save the world.
Fight for the things that matter.
Build the dreams that keep you awake at night.
Give your heart to something bigger than yourself.
But please—
Don't forget to save yourself, too.
Because the world you are trying to build needs you here, healthy, whole, and able to keep going.
And beyond the mission, you still have dreams of your own waiting to become reality. 🩵
You are allowed to save the world—without sacrificing your entire life to do it.
